My Tribute To Rodney King

King represented an enduring symbol of police brutality, not a leader, or hero.  The heated fray of race relations transformed basic practices of policing because of the improper use of authority.

When we are dehumanized we can then be viewed in the eyes of the law as less than human, as less deserving of our full human rights. Those acts of dehumanization forged human bonds with many people in America to give us a sense that we count.

Backed by a system designed for women to lose, the scope and rage of violence utilized reminds me what it is like to be constantly beat down and treated as less than a human being. It shows how much further society still needs to go when citizens and civil libertarians are pushing back on creeping police states asking to  bring police practices in line with local values and state constitutional standards.

Dismissing King as an addict: a criminal with personal demons is an attempt to further dehumanize him so inhumane policies and decisions can be justified to falsely arrest targeted "criminals" and to normalize the lack of dignity and respect for those human beings.
